I first heard this song before I became a Taylor Swift fan. Yeah I remember hearing "Teardrops On My Guitar" on the radio and could sing along with it on the radio, but I wasn't a true fan. I heard about this song because it was leaked, yes leaked. So what did Taylor do? She decided to release it early. Genius. And of course her plan worked. Her third album "Speak Now" was hugely successful.
Who was this song about?
Taylor told Yahoo music in 2010, "This is a situation where a guy that I just barely knew put his arm around me by the water, and I saw the entire relationship flash before my eyes."Who was this person?
It may be a little confusing because the hidden word in "Mine" is TOBY, but it is really about Cory Monteith. (Toby Hemingway was in the music video for "Mine". She couldn't have wrote it about him because she didn't know him until after she wrote the song when she was filming the music video. She may have included his name because he was in the music video and/or she was interested in him) Taylor and Cory hung out from January 2010 to about April 2010. They even went bowling together with Selena Gomez. They became good friends. Unfortunately it didn't work out.
Taylor told Yahoo music, "After I wrote the song, things sort of fell apart, as things so often do. And I hadn't talked to him in a couple months. And the song came out, and that day, I got an e-mail from him. And I was like, 'Yes!' Because that one was sort of half-confession and half-prediction or projection of what I saw."
She was scared of him, scared of what could have been.
"It's a song that's about my tendency to run from love. Every really direct example of love I've had in front of me has ended in goodbye and in breakups and things like that, so I've developed this pattern of running away when it comes time to fall in love and stay in a relationship and this song is about finding an exception to that and finding the person that makes you believe in love and realize that it can work out."
This is what she imagined if she hadn't been scared. The song tells the story of a couple meeting. The boy was in college, th girl. a waitress. They fall in love, "You put your arm around me for the first time." They fight, "And I remember that fight, 2:30 a.m." They make up and he says, "I'll never leave you alone." The music video further elaborates on this theme showing them moving in together, getting married, and having children. One day Taylor I hope you find the person that doesn't make you afraid and you can have a great life with them.

*I couldn't write this post without addressing Cory's death. It was a sad day especially for Taylor. I know how she feels. When friends of mine have passed away it is very hard, very hard. I hope that all his family and friends and Taylor have experienced comfort with his passing and remember all the good times they had with him.
i love your blog...
ReplyDeletepliss don´t stop post, i love all Taylor´s song... i swear everyday i see if you post something new.... i can´t wait for her new album, and i cant wait for all you meaning song :) sorry for my English, i´m from Venezuela
ReplyDeleteSo what i don't really get is "Every really direct example of love I've had in front of me has ended in goodbye and in breakups and things like that". What about her parents? Isn't that usually in 'healthy/working' families the role model for the children of a good, loving partnership?
ReplyDeleteAnd here its not about the text of a song which very well could not be about her live, its art after all, but here its an interview and she clearly talks about HER live.
But in what i have read there is not the slightest hint that her parents ever had any (big) trouble. Also in the videos i saw she seems to have a great relationship with both of them. Though her father seems to be seen very rarely. But that could very well have to do with his job.
I pick on this so much because it was somehwhat my basis to explaining why Taylor is such an awsome, healthy and confident kid / young woman that her family and her upbringing were just excellent. But on the other side most artists are driven to do their art by some sort of personal pain so maybe some kind of rift between her parents in the past or still existing in some form i actually there.
I never bought this theory. First of all because she specifically states that the guy was in college waiting tables so I don't think he was famous (and I think he may actually have been a fan she met and gave her phone number to while college hunting with Austin but I'm not sure) and not only that but she was dating John Mayer at the time and who sits by the water in January? Even if they had been hanging out until April and she wasn't with John I think they were just friends (their hug on their bowling "date" with Selena looked really awkward lol) and not only did she say she barely knew the guy but I think it would be cutting it kinda close to write the lead single just a few months before it was released. Those things are usually planned way in advance and not only that but the time period makes more sense being in spring or summer 2009 when she was single before dating Taylor Lautner and liking Adam Young which makes a convincing case for that random fan guy because she did really do that (and it would've been at that time that Austin was looking at colleges) because he was nice and they got to talking and she loved that he looked like Denny from Grey's anatomy who she had a crush on so she wrote her number on his hand but she said nothing ever happened with him because after she did it she thought "Get a hold of yourself, you just wrote your number on a fan's hand!" but maybe they went on a date before she chickened out. Not to mention the fact that he was in college (and local and she lives by a lake) and could've been a waiter. And the whole thing about every relationship she knew of ending in goodbye I think is because her parents were secretly broken/breaking up. There were reports coming out about that a year or two ago (and they said they'd been separated for two years before that) and if you think about it they make a lot of sense. They are hardly ever seen together anymore (although they come together at times for her) and she bought them two houses one right after the other in 2011. Who buys such an expensive house and then decides it's not good enough and buys another one shortly after? Couple that with things people have heard and seen from meeting Scott and the fact that one of them wasn't there in the beginning and came later to the webchat that was filmed at "their" house and it all makes sense. Also, I googled her dad once (for some other reason entirely) and he came up as being the only person living at his house. I just found that interesting and I'd imagine they just haven't mentioned it because she likes to keep her personal life personal and similar to her friend Jeff Lang dying right after Speak now came out I think she'll never release a song about it (although I'm sure she's written about both events) because she doesn't want people to know they happened and never wants to talk about it since it's something even more painful than a breakup. :( I kinda wish she would though because I think they'd be really good songs that people could relate too all the same and then no one would say she only writes about breakups. I also wished she'd write about what happened with Adam and why she and Abigail don't seem as close anymore. And now this thing with Selena but I doubt she will.
ReplyDeleteThis song is about the guy in the video of "You Belong with Me", Lucas Till. She wrote TOBY to mean the guy in the video. The guy in the video was Lucas. Both him and Roman White (director of the video) confirmed that Lucas and Taylor dated briefly and he said that they "broke-up amicably" just because they were both "too nice". This goes perfect with the song comments she made. Cory was not this type of guy. He was heavily into drugs (not the guy you see your life with) and he said to Ellen that he couldn't date Taylor because "he was not her type". I assumed that after she met him and realized he had a problem with drugs she moved/ran away. This song is about Lucas Till, no doubt.
