"Treacherous" Song Meaning

Today's Taylor Swift song is the meaning of the song "Treacherous" from her "Red Album". If anyone listens to this song it is very apparent what the song is about. It is a deeply personal subject and one that I did not want to write about because it was private to Taylor. But will the re release of "Red" she is hinting more and more what it was about and I feel like I can finally share.

Who and what is this song about? This is a song about Taylor losing her virginity to Jake Gyllenhaal plain and simple. Why Jake? and not John? To understand that look at the song "All Too Well" which will get an updated explanation soon. The scarf represents Taylor's innocence and youth. He took her scarf at her sisters place in the first week. He can not give it back because it is something that can not be given back.

This song "Treacherous" however is not about regret with the decision as others on the album are, but enjoying the moment. "Put your lips close to mine/as long as they don't touch". She asks him to stay and they are "skin and bone". They have a "sleepless night". She realizes that all her life she has been told to not do this with another person and now she is realizing she "like[s] it". For what it is worth she was so connected to Jake at that moment that she wanted to do this with him and in that moment she enjoyed it. Taylor says, "I wanted to explore the idea that something could be dangerous and enticing at the same time. You know but the positive side of that, like I believe that this could work. It's got this big bridge at the end of it that kind of sounds like a second chorus...it says nothing safe is worth the drive and to me that says so much about this album because I really do feel that even if something really hurt you if it made you feel something it was worth it." Basically Taylor is saying yes I got hurt by Jake, but it was worth it to feel that passionate love.

I feel like in the wake of the Me Too movement there this subject has always been taboo. By making it so taboo there can be so many issues hidden and not discussed. Women can feel so alone and at times be taken advantage of with no one to talk to. It is important to know what is normal to feel and how to be treated. That is why Taylor felt like it was "treacherous". Realizing that she enjoyed it and feeling that passion in her life is normal. Women understanding their feelings and realizing it is okay to enjoy such things is so important to women empowerment. As is the opposite, if they do not enjoy it being able to say so should be perfectly fine and acceptable.
