"Look What You Made Me Do" Music Video Meaning and Detail Analysis

Here is the music video and meaning for "Look What You Made Me Do" by Taylor Swift which premiered at the 2017 VMA's on August 27, 2017. This video is absolutely brilliant. Taylor does a wonderful job poking fun at herself while giving the message that she does not really care. This video is a pure mockery and continuation of the "Blank Space" music video on how the media sees her. In Blank Space she played the serial dater, in this video she play many different characters. Taylor dresses up and acts out scenes as different perceptions of herself. She references many events in her life. She references her feud with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, and Katy Perry. She references many music videos and world tours. She references her old boyfriends and her iconic Blank Space video when she is in the bathtub.  Instead of wallowing and being sad about it she says, "Hey that's actually a really interesting character they're writing about...I could use this." Check out the video below and then check out my in depth analysis.

This video is chalked full of references, secret clues and Easter Eggs.  Here is my in depth analysis. I have bolded important points and used caps for the different important characters and scenes. Please let me know what you think or anything I have missed.
  • 0:06 SCENE 1  We see a mansion on the ground from an overhead shot with crows flying, and a lightening and thunderstorm. This reminds me of the thriller opening.
    • 0:10 We see a TS in lights on the ground.
    • 0:17 We see a tombstone that says Here Lies Taylor Swift's Reputation.
    • 0:21 We see Taylor Swift as a ZOMBIE in her Out of the Woods dress, the last music video from the 1989 Era.
    • 0:28 Taylor pulls on of the tombstones to make the stage not tilted anymore. She is holding a shovel and burying someone.
    • 0:30 One of the graves says Nils Sjoberg. This is the pen name she used when she wrote "This is What You Came For" with Calvin Harris.
    • 0:34 Taylor is being buried in her 2014 MET GALA dress, her first appearance of the 1989 Era.
  • 0:35 SCENE 2  Taylor is in a bathtub of jewels, this look is iconic of her BLANK SPACE video, a 1 dollar bill can be see right by her. She is wearing jewels and her nails are painted red. This is the one dollar bill from her court case with Anthony Mueller, which she won! There is a heart necklace on the side of the tub. This is the necklace that Calvin gave her for their one year anniversary. It also spells out no, some have speculated he proposed.
  • SCENE 3 0:50 Taylor sitting on a throne in a red robe, wearing gold shoes and a gold necklace surrounded by SNAKES. In the background on of the pillars says Brute in reference to the Et tu Brute from William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. The snakes are in reference to Kim Kardashian calling her a snake. Her hair is pulled back tightly into a half pony tail.
    • 0:54 Snakes are seen on the ground slithering. There are gold snake staffs holding candles. Taylor's throne is gold and the chair has snakes on it.
    • 0:55 We see a closeup of Taylor's hand. She has 4 snake rings red, gold and silver, her nails are long and painted gold. They look like snake fangs. The gold post of her throne has the words Et tu Brute in black on it, another Shakespeare reference.
    • 1:00 Taylor is being served tea by a snake.
  • SCENE 4 1:06 We see a gold Maserati CAR CRASH into a pole.
    • 1:07 There is a necklace, a watch, and pink/gold coffee cup flying.
    • 1:13 Taylor is dressed in cheetah fur coat, with black sunglasses, gold necklace, black dress, with bright pink lipstick and hair in a pony tail.
    • 1:15 We see a stream of photographers capturing the car crash. The building in the background says TS.
    • 1:16 Taylor is holding a Grammy after the car crash. She has straight blond bangs and looks a lot like Katy Perry in this scene. She may be mocking Katy for not having any Grammy's.
    • 1:20 We see a cheetah in the seat next to Taylor wearing a 13 necklace.
  • SCENE 5 1:21 Taylor is in a gold cage in a red swing, with an ORANGE JUMPSUIT, gold choker and orange boots. Her hair is down and curled. She is surrounded by about 7 men dressed in black with padding on top it looks like.
    • 1:33 Taylor is eating a feast in the cage, with what looks like a red bird, a gold wine cooler, and a glass of wine. This is probably in reference to Katy Perry's Bon Appétit music video.
  • SCENE 6 1:35 Taylor is seen with some henchmen inside a vault. The signs in the back indicate it is the Steam Company. This is in reference to her exit from Spotify and standing up to Apple and how the media said she just exited and made a big deal for the money. She is wearing a cat mask and the others in the vault are too. She is wearing a black sweatshirt with a cat and roses on it on it and "Blind for Love" at the bottom. She has on red boots and her hair is very disheveled. This is in reference to the media always saying she falls so quickly in love and jumps from man to man. She is twirling a yellow bat.
  • SCENE 7 1:43 Taylor gets on a MOTORCYCLE wearing a black hat, black boots, and black leather jacket. It reminds me of Britney Spears look from her I Love Rock 'N' Roll video. It also references her "Bad Blood" music video.
  • Back to SCENE 6 1:46 We see another shot of the BANK with Taylor dressed in the CAT SWEATSHIRT with money falling all around. She is also holding money in her hand and it is burning. This represents the media making fun of her for cats and saying she is money hungry.
    • 1:47: We see Taylor walking with her hood up, back laying on the back of her head. She is accompanied by friends dressed in blue, pink yellow, and red wearing sunglasses and holding money with the stream company in the background. The men in the background are wearing suits and running around like crazy in their desks.
  • SCENE 8 1:50 Taylor is in the front of the room on a stage at a podium with U and SQUAD on two screens. It changes to a cat and then back to the SQUAD. There are lines of woman all dressed in black lingerie. There are two people standing on either side of her. She is also dressed the same except with a cape and red boots. This represents the media saying she only has friends to show off, tells them what to do and post on social media.
    • 2:02 Taylor is laying down with a bunch of the model women.
  • SCENE 9 2:06 Taylor is walking into a BALLROOM of sorts with really curly hair in a black outfit with black netting on top and bottom and a black half cap with very dark lipstick, and black boots. There are men in the room dressed in suit coats following her around. They form a line and hold walkie talkies. There are 8 men. Some speculate these are all her former boyfriends, Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner, John Mayer, Jake Gyllenhaal, Conor Kennedy, Harry Styles, Calvin Harris, and Tom Hiddleston. The Walkie Talkies represent that the media says Taylor tells her men what to do.
  • SCENE 10 2:13 Taylor is standing on a GOLD JET with a saw in her hand. She is wearing a multicolored outfit with boots. The Jet represents that the media saysTaylor jet sets around the world.
  • Back to SCENE 9 2:14 Taylor is standing with the men who we now see are wearing heals and shirts with I Heart TS on them. This is in reference to the shirt that Tom Hiddleston wore on July 4, 2016 on her beach. He was super mocked by the media for wearing it.
  • Back to SCENE 10 2:15 Taylor is cutting the wings off a jet in an airplane hanger.
  • Back to SCENE 9 2:16 Back to the men standing in a line behind Taylor with their hands on their hips. They take off their coats to reveal their I HEART TS shirts.

  • Back to SCENE 9 2:20 Back to the men and Taylor, we see her friend Todrick Hall in the background.
  • SCENE 11 2:22 In a new scene Taylor is wearing a "rep" sweater/short jumpsuit. Her hair looks wet and is pulled back. She is wearing long, silver, pointy earrings. She is standing in front of a lit up T and a bunch of people who happened to be....
    • 2:26 Different Taylor's grabbing and fighting.

    • JUNIOR JEWELL: You guys

    • CAR CRASH TAYLOR: Getting receipts. (2014 VMA Taylor acts astonished 2009 VMA acts sad) Gonna edit this later. (This is in reference to Kim Kardashians fake life, taking selfies all the the time and editing everything later)
    • VMA TAYLOR: Uh, I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative.
    • ALL TAYLORS: Oh Shut Up
This video was amazing. I am glad that Taylor has enough confidence in herself to make a video like this. She is nothing like this video portrays. She is a caring, kind person that just happens to be hugely successful at writing music about her life. I am excited to see what the Reputation album has in store if it is more poking fun of herself or we will see her true self. We will see on November 10th!

"Look What You Made Me Do" Song Meaning and Lyric Video

Today's Taylor Swift song is the the meaning of "Look What You Made Me Do" from her album "Reputation".

The first listen of this song was a bit rough for me. The beginning was really good but the chorus got me. I wondered why she repeated "Look What You Made Me Do" over and over? After watching the lyric video I totally get it. She was emphasizing a point. It has been revealed that Taylor based this off of "I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred. She credits Fred Fairbrass, Richard Fairbrass and Rob Manzoli for co writing the song. Remember that song from the 90's that said, "I'm too sexy for my shirt"? The "Look What You Made Me Do" has the same rhythmic pattern as that line. You can literally sing the "I'm So Sexy" on top of "Look What You Made Me Do".

After listening to the song a few times it reminds me soooo much of Blank Space. It is a very cynical song. She wrote Blank Space to make fun of the media's perception of her. This time she wrote this song to show the cynical side of an event that happened to her.

Here is the lyric video, it is very important to understanding the song. It was produced by Joseph Kahn, a producer that has worked on many of her videos. He is known for his artsy, symbolic, and abstract music videos. It is honestly one of the best lyric videos I have seen.

The video starts out with a chessboard, signifying a game. Taylor knocks over the piece. She does not "like your little games".

Who is playing this game?

It's none other than Kanye West, Kim Kardashian and Katy Perry. The back story goes a few years back with Kanye and Kim. Kanye wrote a song about Taylor in the summer of 2016. He said Taylor owing him sex because he made her famous and he called her a not nice name. He says he made her famous because of the 2009 VMA incident where he took the stage and said Beyonce should have won best video over Taylor. Taylor did not like him writing about her this way. I would not like it either.

In a conspiracy on national Snake Day in 2016 Kim released a video on Snapchat  from her and Kanye's "titled stage" (Kanye had a tilted stage in his show) showing a phone call where Taylor said the song lyrics were okay. Somehow Kanye had recorded the conversation, which is illegal to record without consent. Taylor says the "role [they] [her] play" was a "fool". It's not "cool". I think she is saying here she felt pressured to be okay with the song at the time of the phone call.  But here's the thing, no matter what Taylor said, the song had a bad message, why would she have to put up with it anyway? Why did she have to play that game? I think Kim did it all for ratings, she did have a new season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians on. And she probably grew her Snapchat followers. Kim will do anything for fame, including smearing other people's good name.

Taylor was smeared in the press and who knows what went on behind closed doors. Kim made all these people choose a side. It was just horrible.

The next verse talks about a closer friendship. This is where Katy Perry comes in. Katy Perry has always been a mean girl to Taylor. Taylor wrote about this in "Bad Blood". They were friends. It sounded like Katy asked "for a place to sleep", meaning they were close and probably talked to each other about their lives and offered advice. They are both in the Pop genre. Taylor talks about "kingdom keys", the pop princess keys. Taylor had them with "1989", but Katy is trying them with her new release. In the lyric video we see a crown. Katy "locked [her] out, and threw a feast". In Katy Perry's Bon Appétit music video she is throwing a feast with her head on the platter. During Katy's promotional tour for her new album she talked about Taylor ALL the time flip flopping on whether she was mad or not. Katy said she was not writing a song about Taylor then she came out with "Swish, Swish" which was blatantly about Taylor and her relationship. It was not a nice song basically calling Taylor calculated and fake. I think Katy did all of this for press, if Taylor's name was in the quote it got instant coverage.

Taylor acknowledges she did something wrong with both of them, "Baby, I got mine". But she also says "but you'll get yours". Other times in the song she said you, this time you all. That is why it is about more than one person/situation. She is convinced they will get their just rewards for what they did to her.

Taylor learned from both of these experiences. She "got smarter", "got harder", she has risen up from the "dead". She has done it lots of times. She alludes to others not liking her either, there being a "list of names". This is a mock at the press. She then says she checks the list once, she checks it twice, like Santa Clause. But this is the naughty list and both of them are on it. These incidents made Taylor not trust as much. She says "I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me." In the video the lyrics are on a paper bill and some trees with eyes. And the way it played out probably made some of her friends not trust her as much anymore. I think the dollar bill symbolizes that every one is all in it for the money and the fame. The trees represent everyone hiding. Taylor also alludes to the fact that they changed her " 'I'm sorry, the old Taylor can't come to the phone right now.' 'Why?' 'Oh, 'cause she's dead!' ". She is different now from this experience. I think this is also a jab at Kanye and Kim saying she will not be answering their phone calls and playing their games anymore. The push around Taylor is gone.

And finally the chorus is symbolized in the video with a snake biting itself is "Look what you made me do." Look at how she has changed. The snake was an emoji people were using on her Instagram to shame her. Instagram actually blocked people from using it.

So the question is, should Taylor have wrote and published this song? My answer is mixed. It is good to forgive people but it is also good to get things out on the table. She uses her songs to express the feelings in her life and this was a very powerful incident that shaped her and changed her. I think Kim and Kanye have this coming. They can not act like they own the world and damage Taylor with a very disrespectful song. I have even written a whole article about it. She is justified and I am frankly glad to see she is still sharing her world through song and can not wait to see what the rest of the Reputation album brings! I have a feeling all the songs will not be as harsh. She wanted to come back with a bang.

"Look What You Made Me Do" Lyrics

Look What You Made Me Do Lyrics (Reputation Album)
Released August 25, 2017

Written by Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff, Fred Fairbrass, Richard Fairbrass, Rob Manzoli

I don’t like your little games
Don’t like your titled stage
The role you made me play
Of the fool, no, I don’t like you
I don’t like your perfect crime
How you laugh when you lie
You said the gun was mine
Isn’t cool, no, I don’t like you

But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time
Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time
I’ve got a list of names and yours is in red, underlined
I check it once, then I check it twice, oh!

Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look What you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do

I don’t like your kingdom keys
They once belonged to me
You ask for a place to sleep
Locked me out and threw a feast (what?)
The world goes on, another day, another drama, drama
But not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma
And then the world moves on, but one thing’s for sure

Baby, I got mine, but you’ll all get yours

But I got smarter, I got harder in the nick of time
Honey, I rose up from the dead, I do it all the time
I’ve got a list of names and yours is in red, underlined
I check it once, then I check it twice, oh!

Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do

I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams
(Look what you made me do)
(Look what you made me do)
“I’m sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now.”
“Why?”
“Oh ’cause she’s dead!”

Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do
