"Getaway Car" Song Meaning

Today's Taylor Swift Song is the meaning of the song "Getaway Car" from her Reputation album.

This is one of my favorite songs on the album. Why? Because it is a fun poke at yourself, I do not care what anyone else says, basically Taylor at her best. It talks about two people in a getaway car. In the fourth line of the song Taylor lets on the whole relationship is just a ruse, "But I didn't mean it." She only got in the car because she "wanted to leave him" and "need a reason."

Who is this song about?

It is about Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris, and Tom Hiddleston. Taylor was still dating Adam Wiles, aka Calvin Harris when she helped host the 2016 Met Gala. But she did not have her boyfriend with her on on of the biggest nights of her career. I think at that time they were already having trouble. She met Tom Hiddleston that night and danced up a storm with him.

She references this in the song, "Think about the place where you first met me". This phrase can be literal, they met at the Met Gala ball, and symbolic. "The ties were black, the lies were white/and shades of grey in candlelight." He met Taylor when she was still with her boyfriend and she needed a way out. She was not entirely honest about the whole situation hence the lies.

Tom and Taylor did not publicly get together until a month later. Taylor broke up with Calvin Harris on June 1, 2016. On June 13, 2016 Taylor and Tom were spotted kissing.

They had a whirlwind romance, meeting each others parents that month. Tom went to Nashville to meet hers and Taylor went to England to meet his mom.

Calvin Harris was not happy, and the usually silent about their relationship guy let it all come out on Twitter. He unfollowed her, deleted pictures of her and wrote some scathing tweets about her poisoning "the well". Taylor wrote a song with Calvin called "This is What You Came For" under the pseudonym Nils Sjoberg. He did not want people to know he had collaborated with her and even lied about it when asked by Ryan Secrest if he would ever collaborate with Taylor. On April 28, 2016 he said, "I can't see it happening though. No. She's about to take a long break." When it was revealed Taylor was Nils Sjoberg Calvin wrote a tweet storm "I figure if you're happy with your new relationship you should focus on that instead of trying to tear your ex bf down for something to do." My guess is this song had everything to do with Calvin and Taylor's break up. Taylor might have written the song with him, but they may have had the agreement he would reveal it when the song was released. Calvin decided he did not want Taylor's name involved with the song and decided to not tell anyone about it making her mad. And then they broke up. Calvin's tweets while she was dating Tom made it even worse, it was a "side show", and a "circus ain't a love story."

Tom knew about all this, but went after her anyway, but anyone knows you should NEVER be the rebound guy. He was not "thinkin' ". But "nothing good starts in a getaway car." She hints their relationship was a little contrived and they received money for their pictures. They were "Bonnie and Clyde". When she decided to end it because her heart was not in it, she was just "drinkin' ". She left the "money in a bag" and got out of there. She turned him in. Tom had just done some interviews saying their romance was not for the cameras, but....it was.

Tom only gets one song on the album, probably to explain why she went out with him in the first place. Taylor good for your for getting out of the getaway car as fast as you did. Tom seems nice, but it was not the right time to start a relationship.  It seems you find the right guy finally and more on that in the other songs on the album. "Better Man" Song Meaning

Today's Taylor Swift song is the meaning of "Better Man" from Little Big Town's The Breaker Album.

A few days after it's release it was announced that "Better Man" was written by Taylor Swift.  This was the second song that Taylor wrote in 2016, at least that was found out she wrote.  There was no controversy over the release of this song, unlike "This is What You Came For".  Taylor has been good friends with the group for years that released it.  A lot of fans cherished this song because it went back to her country roots even though she did not sing it.

Who is this song about?

It is about Calvin Harris or Adam Wiles, her boyfriend of one year.  They dated from February 24, 2015 where they met at the Elle Style Awards being introduced by Elle Goulding to June 2, 2016. But sadly it did not last and as an astute fan I could see the tell tell signs.  Adam is a reactionary person and it is great if he is defending Taylor, bad if he is against her.  The line in the song perfectly describes this, "But your jealousy, I can hear it now."  What was this jealously.  Well there is probably many things, but the next line gives the answer, "You're talking down to me like I'll always be around."  Around the time of their breakup, Taylor just happened to win the Album of the Year Grammy, along with a slew of awards.  Adam Wiles, did not attend this award ceremony with her.  He did attend an award ceremony with her earlier in the relationship, The Billboard Music Awards.

I think this jealousy also was aroused when Harry Styles, one of Taylor's exes wrote a song about her called "Perfect" in October 2015 that just so happens to be able to be played exactly along with her hit "Styles".  When he turned 22, he referenced Taylor's "22" song.  Both were sweet outreaches to Taylor.  And both showed that he respected her music.  First writing a song to go with her song and releasing it as a single and making a music video about it.  And second referencing her songs. This probably made Adam super mad, because he knows Taylor had strong feelings for Harry and Harry was extending an olive branch to her.
Taylor also had this problem with Jake Gyllenhaal.  In the song "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" it says, "with some indie record that's much cooler than mine", meaning that Jake respected up and coming indie records more than he respected her music. What made this worse with Adam was that he is also a musician, a very well paid DJ.  He probably was jealous of her success like Jake was the same reason, but added to it, he felt he could not measure up to her.  He did write a song with her, but I think he made her hide that she actually wrote it, because he did not want to give her credit and he wanted to be successful on his own.  When the song did amazingly well he probably got even angrier because he knew she was behind the song. If you look at pictures Adam was always trying to be the lead in the relationship, but he just needed to acknowledge her as an equal and not push her away.

Adam was cold to her at times, "You push my love away likes it's some kind of loaded gun."  He probably was not very nice at times to her and thought she would hang "on every careless word, Hoping it might turn sweet again."

It is interesting to note that the line "I gave you my best and we both know you can't say that" implies that they talked about this and he knew what he was doing, that he was jealous of her.  She loved him when he was nice and charming, "it was magic".  But because of his anger tendencies and his jealously she knew she could not leave.  She knew she had to "run" and get out of the situation.  The song implies that she caught him off guard, "you never thought I'd run".  But she did, even though there was "permanent damage" she knows she is "better off on my own."

I think it is so brave of Taylor to do get out of the situation. I love that she calls him out on it and says if he had been a "better man" she would have stayed.  So empowering. Adam was a great guy in so many ways, but he did have a hot button temper.  People have so many different facets to them, and sometimes even though one side is super sweet and nice, the glaring bad sides will win out and cause much heart ache and pain.  I hope that Taylor finds her prince charming someday.  I know it will be extremely difficult because she is SO successful, it is hard to not be jealous, but somewhere someone exists out there that is like that.  And maybe they are not famous. She needs to keep dating, getting to know people because someone will be out there some day.

"This is What You Came For" Song Meaning

Today's Taylor Swift song is the meaning of the song, "This is What You Came For" cowritten with Calvin Harris.  There is some major about "This is What You Came For" by Calvin Harris featuring Rihanna.  TAYLOR SWIFT wrote it and it was confirmed by Calvin Harris. It was rumored that she helped with the song, but only later was it discovered she wrote the initial song, and used a pseudonym Nils Sjoberg to hide the fact. She even sang on it. She did the initial voice vocals.  I want to hear that version.
What does this all mean?  I do not care how the confession of who wrote the song came out, but we have a new Taylor song this year!!!  So what is the meaning of this song? You have come to the right place.

This is Taylor's song to Calvin or Adam Wiles.  The main chorus says, "Lightning strikes every time she moves/And everybody's watching her/But she's looking at you."  It's basically saying she is surrounded by paparazzi all the time, lightening, but she is always or was always looking at Calvin. It is super sweet of her, saying she just wanted him. It also reminds me of the line in "Out of the Woods", "I was looking at you."

One of the stanzas says, "We go fast 'til they can't replay/Who knows why it's gotta be this way/We say nothing more than we need/I say 'your place' when we leave."  This is saying they go fast, when they are out and do not say much to one another when they are out for fear of listening ears.  They only say enough to get out of prying eyes.  The "who knows why it's gotta be this way" is a wondering why there is such a fascination with their relationship.  Why do people care so much?

But in the end, "Baby, this is what you came for".  Calvin came for Taylor.  It's too bad it did not last and I am not going to speculate why.  I am grateful they had the time to learn from one another and am grateful we got this amazing song.  I hope both are happy as they move forward.

"This is What You Came For" Lyrics

"This Is What You Came For"
(feat. Rihanna)

Baby, this is what you came for
Lightning strikes every time she moves
And everybody's watching her
But she's looking at you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, oh, oh

Baby, this is what you came for
Lightning strikes every time she moves
And everybody's watching her
But she's looking at you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, oh, oh

We go fast 'til they can't replay
Who knows why it's gotta be this way
We say nothing more than we need
I say "your place" when we leave

Baby, this is what you came for
Lightning strikes every time she moves
And everybody's watching her
But she's looking at you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, oh, oh

Baby, this is what you came for
Lightning strikes every time she moves
Yeah

Baby, this is what you came for
Lightning strikes every time she moves
And everybody's watching her
But she's looking at you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, you, oh, oh
You, oh, oh, oh, oh
